Seasonal Hydrography of Ameralik: A Southwest Greenland Fjord Impacted by a Land‐Terminating Glacier

چکیده
Greenland's coastal zone encompasses a large number of fjords, many which are impacted by glacial meltwater runoff from land-terminating glaciers. This type fjord has received limited research attention, yet may represent the future other fjords currently marine-terminating glaciers that retreating. In this study we describe seasonal hydrography Ameralik, on southwest coast Greenland glacier. To complement analysis compare our results with observations neighbouring Godthåbsfjord, receives both land- and We find absence subglacial discharge ice in Ameralik strong impact inner density profiles circulation. The mean temperature upper 50 m layer was lower than Godthåbsfjord May, but September 2°C higher Ameralik. Dense inflows occur late winter months flushing contributing to return weakly stratified state. During period surface waters subject estuarine circulation wind forcing, while at intermediate depths gradient between outer regions produces an baroclinic circulation, resulting exchange water deepening isopycnals. summer fraction is retained within rather being exported. A substantial export accumulated freshwater occurs connection during winter.

Distinct patterns of seasonal Greenland glacier velocity
Predicting Greenland Ice Sheet mass loss due to ice dynamics requires a complete understanding of spatiotemporal velocity fluctuations and related control mechanisms. We present a 5 year record of seasonal velocity measurements for 55 marine-terminating glaciers distributed around the ice sheet margin, along with ice-front position and runoff data sets for each glacier. Among glaciers with subs...

[1] The recent loss of Jakobshavn Isbræ’s extensive floating ice tongue has been accompanied by a change in near terminus behavior. Calving currently occurs primarily in summer from a grounded terminus, involves the detachment and overturning of several icebergs within 30–60 min, and produces long-lasting and far-reaching ocean waves and seismic signals, including ‘‘glacial earthquakes’’. Calvi...
متن کاملContrasts in the response of adjacent fjords and glaciers to ice-sheet surface melt in West Greenland
Neighboring tidewater glaciers often exhibit asynchronous dynamic behavior, despite relatively uniform regional atmospheric and oceanic forcings. This variability may be controlled by a combination of local factors, including glacier and fjord geometry, fjord heat content and circulation, and glacier surface melt. In order to characterize and understand contrasts in adjacent tidewater glacier a...
متن کاملModelling the transfer of supraglacial meltwater to the bed of Leverett Glacier, Southwest Greenland
Meltwater delivered to the bed of the Greenland Ice Sheet is a driver of variable ice-motion through changes in effective pressure and enhanced basal lubrication. Ice surface velocities have been shown to respond rapidly both to meltwater production at the surface and to drainage of supraglacial lakes, suggesting efficient transfer of meltwater from the supraglacial to subglacial hydrological s...
